My favorite memory from my graduate school education was by far the strong relationships I got to build with the extremely intelligent, supportive, and awe-inspiring nurses (now nurse practitioners!) in my cohort. I am beyond excited to see where this next step in their careers takes them but know they will become the absolute best providers and leaders in the nursing community.

Advice for future nursing students

Do not let anyone dictate what your future career should look like. Do what makes you happy and the rest will follow!

My passion for working with children drew me to a specialty in pediatrics but it was my personal experiences with family members requiring medical care that originally led me to a career in nursing. Now, as an advanced practice nurse, it is my goal to enact positive change in the American healthcare system in both my role as a provider and through policy and system-wide improvements.

Favorite nursing memory/moment

A favorite moment is when I taught Social Emotional Learning to children of immigrant families at the Chinese Information and Service Center for our public health clinical. I felt a huge joy moment every week. It's not like other parts of nursing where we intervene and care for acutely ill patients. This was more of a preventive effort to equip children with tools to help them navigate life and their mental health in the future. It's an incredibly important health component anyone can benefit from. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to give back to my community.

Advice for future nursing students

Befriend those you respect, can learn from, and want to become! And... find a friend group who can confirm assignment deadlines and repeat what the Professor said. Tell your nursing preceptors your goals for the day. Use a small notebook as your "brain." Don't skip breaks during clinicals. Drink your water. Empathy, critical thinking, growth mindset, self-love >>> stanleys, hokas, figs. Lastly, be kind to others, don't burn those bridges!

I've always loved connecting and helping people. So when I discovered it takes more heart to become a nurse than any other healthcare professional, I happily left the pre-med track and joined nursing. And, a random travel nurse I met on the link in Seattle when I was traveling at 19 confirmed this for me!

While in school, what I missed the most is the amount of quality time with my beloved children, Leon and Trisha. My warm gratitude to them for understanding my disappearance and giving me reason to live and keep going. I am truly grateful to my husband for managing all family responsibilities, while attending your own graduate school, and being my source of strength through thick and thin.

To my dear friends, I am deeply grateful for your support and encouragement, whether through a quick text message or a phone call or caring for our kids when we were busy. I feel truly blessed and thankful to have such a comforting and supportive network of friends and family.

Completing a doctoral degree is near impossible without a strong, supportive network behind you. So, I want to thank my mother & brother for being there through it all. My interest in psychiatric-mental health began in my undergrad years when I studied biology and psychology. I was so fascinated with the science behind learning and behavior that I sought a career where I could learn more. I eventually chose to pursue psychiatric nursing and found that I really enjoyed working in this field. I continued on to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner because I found it rewarding to engage with people, listen to their stories, and work together to develop a plan for wellness and recovery.

With covid we had to learn technology- one student was out sick and remotely joined the class on the robot. While quickly trying learn how to control the robot, she accidentally ran over the guest speaker. The whole class had a good laugh out of it. Grateful for my mentor, Dr. Lisa Florence (retired transplant surgeon), who always believed in me and wrote my admission recommendation letter.

I have too many clinical interests: scrub nursing, wound care, critical care, and even emergency medicine. Ideally, I would like to join a float pool while I try to figure out where I excel the most. Hopefully, I can find a nurse residency program that offers an option to explore various departments. My long-term plan is to become a nurse practitioner, once I get some clinical experience and find my niche.

Favorite nursing memory/moment

This program was intense, not only academically, but also emotionally — from trying not to drown in homework assignments on Sunday night and waking up at 4 a.m. so I can prep on my patients before the nursing huddle to trying not to cry during a pediatric rotation when taking care of very sick kids. I have learned a lot about myself and others through this experience — lessons I will carry with me into my professional practice.

Advice for future nursing students

You can do it! Make sure you leave at least one day a week for self-care, invest in your health and stick to your routines no matter what. Your weekends will never be the same since most assignments are due Sunday night or Monday morning, and some of you might even have weekend clinicals, so try to spend some time during the week with your loved ones! This program is a team effort, recruit family and friends to help you out with chores and errands when possible. Cooperate with your peers on homework assignments, and lighten your load!

My favorite memory during the DNP Family Nurse Practitioner Program is recording the physical examination skills validation videos with my daughter. Maddie was 9 years old at the time, and she was very excited to help in any way she could. She was a very good and helpful patient, reminding me to check the other leg for reflexes after I checked the first one! She also helped me practice my TOPE (timed observed physical examination) and offered subtle cues when needed. I am grateful that pursuing my passion also allowed me to create precious memories with Maddie.

My favorite memory would have to be coming together as a coalition of Queer students to advocate for the school of nursing curriculum to integrate LGBQTIA+ healthcare, centering the Trans and Nonbinary communities. I love my fellow accomplices! <3

Center self-care through the program. Create habits that lift up your well being. Tend to your friendships and loved ones who will support you who know you is so nourishing! I am amazed by the amount of care, commitment, and love that has poured into my life as I maneuvered this immense achievement.

First of all, cheers to my kiddo who has remained my motivation and source of pride. Thank you for dancing with me on the day I got my acceptance letter, for asking me about my nightly homework topics, and for being open and willing to share my time and attention. I could not have asked for a better grad school buddy.

To my family and friends who stood next to me and cheered me on over the last 3 years, I truly could not have done this without each of you! Mom and Dad, thank you endlessly.

To my partner who saw me through some of the most difficult times of my graduate school career, thank you for carrying me to the end. Thank you more for acknowledging and celebrating each accomplishment along the way. I felt supported but I also felt encouraged to grow with each challenge.

I will be joining the Fred Hutch Cancer Center and University of Washington Medical Center in starting an inpatient immuno-oncology team working with CAR-T cell therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors. I am excited to grow this APP-led team and build my career in immunotherapy.

There are a handful of nurses who deeply inspired me to become a nurse during the COVID pandemic. Those nurses are: Kristin Augustine, Meagan Buck, Kara Young, Caitrin Jackson, Caryn Rumble, Yaelenine Schnell, and Erica Kostenko. These women took me under their wing when I was curious and new to the ICU. They cheered me on when I decided to apply to nursing school and left a mark on my heart that I want to carry on when I become a nurse. My career objectives gravitate towards working primarily with children and families within the Latino community in a rural setting. One of my favorite memories was our first day of physical school. A group of students and myself got lost and ended up in a secured lab by accident. That experience summed up how I felt at the beginning of this DNP journey, completely lost and out of my element. It was a funny and humbling experience. It also showed me that by pushing through, no matter how lost you may feel at first, you will find your way to the right door :)

The advice I have for future nursing students is to do your homework as early as possible. It helps with stress and clarifying questions on the homework. Also, formulate an organization system that works for you to organize your classes and homework.

I am blessed to have a family who shared and lived my dream of doing a DNP-FNP at UW. I couldn't have completed or imagined doing all this without my husband's and children's unwavering support through all these years. My children learned to cook and take care of not only themselves but also me. They slept while waiting for snuggles for so many nights. I want to credit my parents for the genes and nurturing that make me resilient through life's struggles. My mother, sisters and sister-in-law, nephews, and nieces kept cheering for me all these years. They understood I still loved them all, even if I rarely joined the marriages, functions, or family calls. It takes a village to not only raise a child but also to get a doctorate. That village would be incomplete without mentioning my instructors and peers at the School of Nursing who walked alongside me during this journey. It always felt like a team effort, and we were all there for each other. The instructors, system, and everything at the University of Washington was very conducive to education and growth. They all contributed to making me a better version of myself. I am so happy to be called a Husky, the University of Washington alum. Thank you all for being so amazing!

My passion for nursing was solidified after making the most meaningful connection with a resident during my CNA training clinicals. Helping out elderly residents with their ADLs taught me how to preserve patient's dignity during a time in their life where they feel a loss of independence. This inspired me to go further with my education to be able to help different populations and use my scientific knowledge to improve the health of others.

My memory from my education is one day, while doing clinical, and saved one of my patient's life. I noticed that my patient's RR was twice the normal value and notified my instructor, then my instructor notified everyone else involved in their care, and a rapid response was initiated.

Take notes during school, especially during the med surg quarter, and be kind to your professors.

Advice for future nursing students

As you begin to learn about health systems and the issues that continue to impact communities & populations, remember that everyone you meet is your teacher - your peers, patients, communities, and professionals in other disciplines or sectors.
